El 12 de octubre de 1492

What do you think of when you hear the name Christopher Columbus?

So did Columbus really discover America???  Check out this short
video about the history of Columbus and this video explaining the origins of the holiday to learn more.

Christopher Columbus or Cristóbal Cólon as he is known in Spanish is a complicated figure in history and social media is helping to finally explain this history to the United States.  There are currently fifteen cities who no longer celebrate Columbus Day as noted in this article and I expect that there will be more cities and states following this trend in the coming years. Here is some more information as well.

After watching the videos and talking about the information we read in the online blog that we viewed in class, what do you think about Christopher Columbus?  Was he an inspiring founder of the new world or an evil villain who violently conquered the new world?  Was he both???

What do you think about the holiday in the United States that honors Christopher Columbus? Are you surprised that some Americans want to change the name and the meaning behind the holiday?  Are you surprised that some don't want it to change?  Do you think that Americans feel differently after learning more about the actual history of Columbus? Why or why not?

How about Día de la Raza, Indigenous Peoples' Day or Discovers' Day?  Are these better celebrations of el 12 de octubre or just different interpretations of history?

How do you think we should celebrate el 12 de octubre???

I think that it should be changed to discovers day. I think this because there are many people who can be credited with discovering america and I think that this recognizes all of them.

  4. I honestly don't care. It doesn't matter to me.

  5. I think we should celebrate it as Indigenous Peoples's Day and learn about Indigenous people.

  6. I don't really care how we celebrate the day as long as there is no school. But if I had to pick a side I would go against Columbus.

  7. I think we should celebrate it the way it is now, with different names for the holiday depending on how the state or country recognizes them.

I feel like we shouldn't celebrate Columbus day since he was such a bad person. On the other hand, I really want a day off of school so there should be something to replace it. I don't care what it is but I want a day off.

I think that we should celebrate Columbus Day as Indigenous peoples day. I believe this because if we are really celebrating who discovered and lived in the Americas first then that would be the Native people; not Columbus.

I think we should celebrate Columbus Day as Indigenous Peoples' Day because the youth of America is being taught that Christopher Columbus was a great, heroic person, when that is not at all the case. I think Indigenous Peoples' Day is a better substitution for the holidy.

  12. Julia Cotsonas: I think that we should celebrate el 12 de octubre the same way, but call it a different name like Indigenous People Day, or something that is less offensive to some people.

I think that Columbus day should be renamed and to celebrate the people who were really here first. It does not seem right to celebrate the person who enslaved the people who were here first. So, I think we should change the name to celebrate the right people.

I think we should just name it exploration day to honor his exploration and other explorers but not necessarily honor Columbus as a person and instead let it mark a day of exploration we can call exploration day

When I think of Columbus I think about the discovery of America. In addition, I think about how he didn't actually discover America and how bad of a person he was. I think we should celebrate Native American day instead, to honor the people who were first in our country, after all we have put them through, as whites.

  16. I think we should celebrate it as any other day other than Columbus day. Any of the other names work just fine for me.

  17. Callia Smith - I don't really care that much about how we celebrate the 12th of October. I don't think we should celebrate for Christopher Columbus, but I like both days of Indigenous Peoples' Day and Dia de la Raza.

I believe it can be anything as long as it doesn't recognize a maniac killer who falsely discovered America It could be discoverers day or indigenous people day.

I think that we should not celebrate Columbus, but rather Native Americans. Indigenous People deserve a day that they can celebrate their heritage. Columbus is a very controversial character and he has caused much controversy. Why should we celebrate a horrible human being? This just encourages others to do what he did.

I think we should change the day to , "International No School Day"

I think we should celebrate it as a discoverer's day so instead acknowledging a specific person, we show appreciation to discoverer's as whole.
